I basically just told you but here are some more details. This guy was sexually harassing what he believed to be a teenage girl online. He even sent her a video of himself jerking off and moaning. The predator catchers got him arrested but charges were dropped due to the fact that they're not official law enforcement.

So? Don’t they just turn over the ones they expose to the actual police?

Yes. That's what doesn't make sense.
My guess? Some judge figured that the producers pre-coordinated with the law enforcement officers who then move in to make the arrest as soon as the producers get enough evidence on tape (mostly from the mouth of the offenders).

To the extent that this constitutes relying on a private entity to undertake criminal law enforcement, I’m guessing that the judge has determined that this makes it official “state action” and that this somehow violates the Constitutional rights of the scumbag offenders.

I assume that will get reviewed by a higher court. If my guess is right, the judge got some legal analysis plainly wrong.

Edit. I misstated the one responsible for this decision. It wasn’t a judge. It was the local prosecutor. My mistake. Her “judgment” is ridiculous.
