Kirk was a high-profile political figure killed by a deranged young man with a gun in yet another all-too-common tragic scenario in America that transcends partisanship.

The derangement of the killer makes concocting a rational motivation impossible.

His being yet another victim no way deifies him, despite some trying to exploit the tragedy.
