He was hit directly in the carotid artery directly carrying blood from the heart to the brain.

1. This is the one vital area good as a head shot that cannot be protected by a bulletproof vest.
2. The base of the neck is tied to the torso, so cannot move around as easily as the head.
3. An impact there would immediately send a hydrodynamic shock to the brain and the pressure wave would likely be instantly fatal.
4. The victim would bleed out so fast with so much trauma so near the heart that death is certain.
