The health agency, in a statement to Reuters, said it made adjustments to its COVID Data Tracker's mortality data on March 14 because its algorithm was accidentally counting deaths that were not COVID-19-related.

The CDC gets their data from the states who get it from the individual hospitals. If those hospitals update their coding then the correct thing for the CDC to do is to adjust their data.

It is. I do not know how coding works at hospitals so I cannot say why it was higher, but the smaller number overall makes the higher percentage easier to obtain.

What does the CDC have to gain by changing the numbers?
