CBS cancels 'The Late Show,' Stephen Colbert to end program in May 2026

They were losing $40M a year on the show.

It's hard to believe that the number 1 rated late night talk show could actually be losing money. If the viewership of such shows was that dire, there wouldn't be any at all.

CBS made the announcement. Skydance is the one who made the decision get rid of him. They're going to buy Paramount+. They want to make money. Why in the world would they continue running a $40M/year money pit when the genre as a whole is heading towards the way of the dodo?

What's funny to me is people think that Colbert is that influential. Trump won again in spite of his constant bashing of Trump and MAGA. Who does the left have in media that Trump needs to target because he's afraid of them? Maddow? Tapper? 60 Minutes? Psaki? Not exactly a murderer's row.

Well, they could have tried to make it less of a "money pit." (If it ever really was one in the first place) But they decided to just cut it.

It's a money pit according to the network that runs the show. If you have numbers to refute that, present them. How many of the 200-people staff do you think they should cut? How much of a salary reduction should Colbert take? Where do you think they should move the show after leaving the Ed Sullivan Theatre? The biggest reason why it's losing so much money is because advertisers aren't buying ads like they used to. And why should they when there are podcasts and YT content creators that get as much or more views than those late-night shows. Also, the demographics of those listeners/viewers are more in line with whom these companies want to reach to try and sell stuff. The genre's dying and don't be surprised if the announcements of the end of Kimmel's and Fallon's aren't made too far in the distant future.

I am more worried about what Trump will do to social media. If he leans on Google, Meta, and X hard enough, he could have accounts and channels that criticize him banned. It's ironic that the so-called free-speech absolutists are not really saying much now. Ironic, but not really.
The President using the pulpit or government agencies putting pressure on social media platforms to shadow ban or outright ban those who didn't go with him or his narrative. I think I've heard something like that happened before. Pretty recently, in fact. :eusa_think:

All the nastiest leftwing hate merchants are falling one by one: Chris Cuomo, Don Lemon, Joy Reid and now Colbert. Maddow has been reduced from five to one day a week. NPR has been defunded. Asshat Jimmy Kimmel and the crones on The View are the only one remaining. I have a feeling he’ll be gone soon. Hate is becoming rather unfashionable, it seems, and that is thanks to President Trump.
Hey guys. Mashie called another one.
