Careful Of That Big Virus On This Site...

I haven't had a problem, but I do know that the system restore works well when I have had a problem like this.

Actually, the virus in question disables system restore and masquerades as a security program (it names itself on the basis of your OS). I've now been infected with it twice. I think it may be one of the ads on the site, frankly. It hit me on Friday while I was at work (our work computers use Kaspersky, which imo, sucks). The first time, I had several windows open, but on Friday, I had zero windows open but USMB. I'm pretty sure that it is somehow linked to this site. It is a bugger to remove.

Yea i've gotten it a couple times. It's definitely from here. I don't know if it's someone targeting individual threads with it or if it's in one of the ads. But it is pretty nasty. You can do a System Restore in Safe-Mode. That's the only way i could get System Restore to work. I also ran my security scans in Safe Mode. It does disable most of your programs. I have reported this problem so hopefully they're working on it. I would hate to have to give up coming here. I really do like this site.

Hate to be a Buzz-Kill but please be careful of the Big Virus that keeps popping up on this site. Make sure your Anti-Virus programs are up to date. I picked it up again last night. I tend to surf on a work laptop, and we aren't allowed to use linux or other virus protection programs. Can the owner or administrator of this site PLEASE do something to get rid of it?

Ok this might be a dumb question but . . . if you use AdBlock and the virus is in an ad would that mean you've effectively blocked the virus? Inquiring minds want to know.

Last week I was unable to even log in here. Either something or someone screwed with my account because when I tried to log in it said wrong user name and/or password and that I'd used up all 5 of my log-in tries, (this was after the first try) and that I had to wait 15 min. I waited and the same thing happened. I made a new user name account and logged on but when I logged off then tried to log on again with the new user name the same thing happened. I emailed USMB and it was fixed.

If your security protection is up to date it will likely catch it and remove it. But if it somehow gets through,just go into Safe-Mode and do all your full scans. Or you can go into Safe-Mode and do a System Restore. But i would try and get rid of it first before doing a System Restore. It's a nasty little Virus. But your security should take care of it.

I have no idea why anyone would use Windows. Every Windows machine I've ever owned has gotten a virus at some point. I've run Linux for about 7 years now and haven't gotten a single virus. It also freezes up far less frequently than Windows. Almost never.

For a while Linux was really only usable to folks with at least a little expertise at computers - but recently, Linux's like Ubuntu provide the same level of user friendliness as Windows but with all the advantages of Linux.

I use SalineOS which is a tweaked Debian stable 6.0.
It's completely crash proof and, like all flavors of Linux, viruses are a non-issue.
I actually installed an anti-virus that will spot viruses in incoming emails.....or porn sites....I get a few warnings but continue since 99.999999999999% of viruses are geared to the Winbloze sheep ( repugz and demonz)

I agree. Everytime I login, my software tells me it blocked an attack.
