Amanda and Peter were best of friends and pretended they would go on great adventures simply using their imagination. Amanda and Peter even fantasized about being able to fly around the world by flapping their arms like birds. They were a fun-loving couple of friends, and they started daydreaming about meeting Barbie (the doll) as a 'fairy' or 'spirit' who comes to life once you find her on a magical island. Amanda and Peter believed Barbie represented some of the most optimistic features of American culture/society, so there was no 'reason' to believe Barbie could not somehow (someday) become a real person (like Pinocchio!).

Amanda and Peter decided to 'stake-out' very visually iconic commerce-hubs or consumerism 'stations' such as McDonald's restaurants with playgrounds in the back, Kay-Bee toy stores, fish-aquarium stores, and BP gas-stations (basically any shopping-themed 'site' which offered colourful and/or lively/illuminated symbols/plates/logos. Since Barbie was a shopping-gift item, Amanda and Peter decided that they should search for her 'spirit' in lively illuminated shopping-hub locations/totems. It was a strange but patriotic quest!

Any time you have a dream-filled quest, you find a proverbial 'Devil's Advocate.' For Amanda and Peter, this 'adversary/challenger' was U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump, a former casino-mogul, was always sceptical about non-business/non-finance oriented 'economics-veiled propaganda' regarding capitalism/consumerism and its relation to democracy. To Trump, Amanda and Peter's "patriotic fantasy" about finding the 'spirit' of Barbie at a 'magically lit-up' BP gas-station was utter nonsense. Amanda and Peter realized they were like Wendy and Peter Pan (with Barbie as Tinkerbell), and President Trump was like the challenging/calculating Captain Hook when they heard Trump say on CNN, "There's nothing 'magical' about shopping in America (e.g., Black Friday)!"

pp2.jpg

This was a very basic tale of 'spy vs. spy.' Amanda and Peter were like idealistic 'crusaders' searching for the 'magical face' of consumerism (if there was one!), while President Trump was the 'cold scientist' looking for practical (and measurable!) ways to make capitalism/consumerism a profitable 'arm' of democracy throughout the world. Who would win such an argument? Was Barbie simply a 'consumerism-trophy' or was she potentially also a capitalism-deity? The special contest ironically read like a comic book, which is why Richie Rich comics were adapted into a Hollywood (USA) film starring the great Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone)!

Amanda and Peter were thrilled when their parents purchased for them a very polished and fancy wooden chess set-and-board for Peter's birthday, which included its own pull-out drawer for putting away the pieces after gameplay. Amanda and Peter called this chess set-and-board their 'Ouija-window into Barbie's soul,' so Amanda officially named it the Barbie-Chess-Set. Amanda and Peter learned how to play chess an would play for hours, pretending Barbie was guiding them for their special moves while making fantastic jokes about why President Trump would consider such a daydream-activity complete 'nonsense.'

Amanda and Peter remained friends forever, and they never stopped 'searching' for the spirit of Barbie, which is why Peter would eventually write a book titled Capitalism: A Love Story. It would win him the Pulitzer Prize, and Amanda would use its intellectualism to make prayers for Barbie(!). Maybe President Trump was correct, however, about capitalism requiring complete objective indifference towards patriotism/superstition. Only Barbie could decide! Peter became a fan of the media-friendly NFL team the New York Jets (for their colourful uniforms) and would daydream that the spirit of Barbie was somehow 'shielding' America from the cynicism presented by anti-capitalism terrorists (i.e., ISIS). Peter was thrilled when the Jets squared off against the Goliath-like New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game in NFL Season 53 --- the game reminded him of the simple marketability of capitalism/democracy. Were Amanda and Peter witches?
