Canadians are sadly misguided and CBC doesn't help. The reason tariffs hit us hard is because we lose our geniuses. We often destroy them.

Well you must protect the Chinese.
Bobbie, bobbie, bobbie, if you don't understand anything about sanctions then don't keep trying to waste my time.

Let me get you started! Sanctions are economic warfare that can only work for a country that possesses the power to make it work.

Trump implemented sweeping tariffs on about $300 billion of Chinese-made products when he was in office. President Joe Biden has kept those tariffs in place and, after the USTR finished a multiyear review earlier this year, decided to increase some of the rates on about $15 billion of Chinese imports.

The products that will now face increases are in line with Biden’s other economic policies aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing in industries including clean energy and semiconductor chips.

“Today’s finalized tariff increases will target the harmful policies and practices of the People’s Republic of China that continue to impact American workers and businesses,” US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said in a press release.

American workers and businesses can't compete competitively with China. Everybody already knows that Bob.

That's the real reason for the tariffs to start with. That's the reason why America needs to try the sanctions experiment in desperation.

The big problem with that is that China will slap even heavier sanctions on America the next day. And they have the industries and labour force to make them work! What the fk are Americans thinking?

You're either way over your head in this Bob, or you're in denial. Or both!

And too fwiw Bob, this is the reason why America is pissing in its own Corn Flakes by interfering with cheap labour from the south. You need another 10 million illegal migrants yesterday.

Legal migrants enter daily and have little problems. Why do you persist on just illegal aliens?
As to trade with China, The USA really made a huge mistake by working closely with China as how you present your argument. So why not change? Back to not working with China?

Trump gave them an out to quit selling to the USA. See what China does and then try to help China.

When they ask Canadians they get offended "we will just buy Canadian".

Yes, great idea. Just what does Canada produce? Are we all going to go out and buy timber and barrels of oil? Maybe we hit Tim Hortons (no longer a Canadian company) and drink more coffee?

We don't have the Teslas, Microsofts, Apples, or even domestic auto industries. We have oil, cops and government officials. All of these "assets" are growth industries ffs.

I am one of countless oppressed by the Stasi. Imagine just how much talent and ambition these criminals have stifled?

Now we cry and throw out ideas that don't make sense. We have hurt ourselves and left ourselves vulnerable as we have very few value-add products. We don't even have a refinery...

Oh, and if you want to talk about protectionism. A citizen from Ontario cannot buy more than a limited amount of beer from Quebec and take it to their home as they would be committing a crime! I don't know the maximum, two cases of beer or something. What a disturbing system with zero accountability for the abusers.

The benefits of being a United States territory would be many fold for you.

Because they don't need to be recorded and they can be paid a buck a day. The legal ones need to be paid wages that America's industries and agriculture can't afford. Get it?

The US made a hell of a lot more mistakes than that with China.

The big mistake was not cooperating with China!
Trump gave them an out to quit selling to the USA. See what China does and then try to help China.
Trump needs to ban all goods from China and see how that works for him?

I think we're finished Bob. You have nothing to add to the discussion.

Tariffs are part of trade relations. Are you braindead?
Prove to me you're not and we might have something to discuss.

All you need to know is that China has the power advantage it needs to jam Trump's tariffs right back up his ass. Tariffs are the property of the superior power that can force it on others. That is no longer America!

It's no mystery why Americans don't understand that.

They just don't want to understand!

If China has the "power", why didn't they shove them up Biden's ass? He kept in place many of Trump's original tariffs on China, and even added more while he were in office. That's the reason President Trump only put a 10% tariff on China, as opposed to the 25% on Canada and Mexico.

China's in pretty bad shape; economically and socially. Timing is right to show them how the cow ate the cabbage.

800 lb gorillas don't need to cooperate. And so the game of chicken begins.
Did you hear hon that the gorilla cancelled over 900 billion in trade with the US?
Could it be true?

Naw, we are an emaciated chimpanzee who thinks it's an 800 lb gorilla.

The problem with playing Chicken is, eventually, someone doesn't swerve.
That doesn't square with reality.

And someone always swerves. Concessions will be made. China has no choice.

Relax. It's a negotiation tactic. They have to be brought to heel.

Why? They aren't the problem.

The problem is that our corporations gutted our manufacturing infrastructure and it isn't coming back.

You are blaming China for what we did to ourselves.

Probably not a smart thing to do when China can just call in all our debt and cause an economic collapse, if they really wanted to.

Sure they are. Unfair trade practice of pegging their currency to the dollar artificially keeps their prices low. If manufacturing is ever going to recover here, their prices need to go up organically. But since they won't do that we will need to do that for them.
