Congratulations, Washington State... you're now on the hook for a new emergency interstate bridge. I don't know how much that's going to cost, but so far the Canadian driver has racked up a whopping $250 fine for failure to follow his permit.

I saw the report when it happened, but they didn't say anything about the driver. I would imagine the trucking company's insurance will pay for the repair to the overpass, but it won't cover the citizens' inconvenience.

I doubt the carrier has more than $10 million in insurance.

I'm betting an emergency rebuild will be close to 10 billion.
 
According to the link, there may have been excessive traffic on the radio and communications were garbled. No excuse, but it happens.
He didn't read his permit.

Permit said he was supposed to exit and re-enter, up and over, to avoid the bridge.

Very common with overheight loads. The pilot car is a secondary precaution.

I don't agree. The lead and chase cars are required on all oversize loads. This wasn't the first overpass he had come to. No question that someone screwed up royally, but this wasn't a really uncommon occurrence even for American truckers.

That's weird.

Maybe every 10th oversized load I might get one car. But I don't go to Washington.

But the pilot car... in this case the pole car, is insurance that the load will not hit anything on the permitted route. Going under this bridge was not on the permit route. The route was to exit. The driver is responsible for reading and understanding the routing.

I hope so. $250 fine, my ass. I bet it costs at least $900,000 to repair the damage shown. They will have to basically knock down and replace one full span.

Now there is a good lesson to be learned here about the safety aspects of tire pressure. Over inflation of the tires, while giving you better mileage, will make your vehicle ride slightly higher.

And this is the result!

According to this website the repair will be 8 million.

That seems awful low to me, but I'd rather you have the accurate official number than my speculation...

I get your point, but I don't think under inflated tires would have dropped that load enough to prevent that damage completely.

You're probably right, that wouldn't make that much difference.

The guy was Canadian. Our standard trucks are 14 feet tall whilst their trucks are metric. They go by meters, not feet. 14 meters is taller than 14 feet.
