BURR: Why are doctors exiting the public system in Canada?

MARTIN: There are no doctors exiting the public system in Canada, and in fact we see a net influx of physicians from the United States into the Canadian system over the last number of years.

(The ultimate zinger came at the end of the exchange, when Burr thought he had Martin down for the count about wait times in Canada, and she neatly put the difference between the Canadian and U.S. systems in perspective.)

BURR: On average, how many Canadian patients on a waiting list die each year? Do you know?

MARTIN: I donÂ’t, sir, but I know that there are 45,000 in America who die waiting because they donÂ’t have insurance at all.

A ***** slap in which the one delivering starts with his or her hand below the waist.
Rubbernecker #1: "Oh, shit! That poor bastard just got ***** slapped!"
Rubbernecker #2: "No, no, my friend. That was an ATOMIC *****-slap. Notice how that poor bastard's assailant pulled his hand all the way below his waist before letting loose? Man, he's gonna need to put some ice on that."

Again and again, Republicans are blindsided by facts. The true deadly enemy of the GOP aren't Democrats. Not al Qaeda (course they did let Bin Laden go). Not Blacks or gays. No, it's "facts". Facts are the deadly enemy of the GOP.

Republicans cry about the insult from Alan Grayson, "Republican's health care plan is to 'die quickly'".

See? It's not "die quickly", it's just "die".

And I believe the doctor was talking about Canadian doctors moving back to Canada, not American doctors moving to Canada. That almost never happens. However, it does happen that Canadians move to the US.

List of U.S. states and territories by population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi Rdean:

If you compare the population of Canada to US, and also the prison population and costs of crimes from human and drug trafficking,
maybe you'd see why the health care issue and cost is better addressed per State. Canada clearly does not have the same issues
that CA and TX are facing, much less the rest of the US.

Compare the populations of TX and CA alone, and the billions spent on prosecution and incarceration, including illegal nationals,
and THAT's where public resources are wasted that could easily cover health care through sustainable programs. Instead of fighting over federal insurance mandates,
We need to invest in more medical schools, programs and facilities -- NOT pay for more federal legislation or regulation that doesn't solve the problems locally
with criminal problems costing even more to the public. The issues with crime are better addressed with early diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, addiction and behaviorial/abuse issues.
Federal mandates or health insurance is not going to solve the problem with crime and abuse that is costing our public health and safety. That has to be addressed locally.

Trying to take a solution and impose it across the board through federal government is like the UN trying to take a policy and impose it for Canada, Mexico, etc.
That's NOT how our system was designed to work.

However, there is nothing wrong with taking a model that works so well that other states ADOPT IT FREELY,
it just can't be imposed by federal government without overstepping bounds.

This is the same reason why prolife advocates aren't allowed legally to take their beliefs about laws and "impose it" across the board for ALL people in a state or ALL states in the union. Clearly their goal is similar -- to save lives (and a LOT MORE THAN 45,000 LIVES of unborn children are aborted each year if you want to compare with health care that can be paid for OTHER WAYS BESIDES INSURANCE), but that is NOT justification for overriding free choice.

If the Constitutional principle of representative govt and free choice trumps even the "right to life" of unborn babies,
sure the concept of free choice applies to freedom to pay for health care other ways besides federal insurance mandates.

Our Constitutional laws protect free choice from imposition by faith-based beliefs,
and that same argument applies to BELIEF in singlepayer and right to health care.

Believing in God and Jesus can save lives, but it can't be forced by law.
It must be freely chosen or the govt is overstepping Constitutional bounds and in breach of contract.

I'm really surprised more prochoice liberals can't see this,
after spending years since 1973 fighting off prolife arguments based on freedom of choice.

All those years, and suddenly with this bill, none of that seems to matter anymore.
No wonder liberals look insane to other people, I can't figure this out myself.

All I get is it is some kind of political tactic, like holding people hostage with
something they don't want, to force something else. Clearly partisan imposition
and in violation of Constitutional oaths and ethics on representing all people equally,
putting laws and regulations above party or personal interests.

FTR, my parents live on Vancouver Island. My mother had her knee replaced. She had to wait four months. Then, they called her, and said she could have her knee replaced in two weeks, but she had to go to Calgary for the operation. They botched it, and she is in a lot of pain. Her GP is incompetent, and she wants to change doctors but can't. Where she lives, there is a shortage of doctors, and 10% of residents don't have a GP. Thus, there is a waiting list, and doctors will effectively not take patients if they already have a doctor because they prioritize those who don't have a doctor. So, effectively, she cannot change. She lives in pain because of it.

My father has had neurological problems. He had carpal (not from being on the computer). He had to wait a year to see a neurologist, the only one on the island, because it's considered a "lifestyle" condition, not a life-threatening one. So he too lived in pain until it was eventually rectified.

If I were poor or lower middle class, I'd rather be in Canada for medical care. But since I'm not, I'd rather be in America.

On average, how many Canadian patients on a waiting list die each year?

...there are 45,000 in America who die waiting because they don’t have insurance at all.
~~~
The 'answer' doesn't respond to the question.
Why would a Canadian doc know about American stats but not her own country stats?
Well if you where being honest you would have quoted her correctly.
i highly doubt many people die from elective surgery who happen to be on a waiting list. You do understand what elective means right?
It comes from a well-publicized Harvard study.
I don't know if there has been a study about how many Canadians die on waiting lists or when they can't get the treatment.
"And I believe" is never a "fact". The operative word being "believe". Remember the lady with cancer the GOP used for political ads? When it was pointed out she would pay LESS under Obamacare, she simply flat out said "I refuse to believe it".
well dear, Being on a waiting list tends to mean you are in for an elective surgery. If you were to say Google this issue you would have known that serious issues get treated right away. If you have a gun shot, you dont have to wait 12 hours to be seen. You are merely following the talking point and not the context.
sad.
The problem with the US system is that we don't get our money's worth. A lot of the problems with the analysis is that people assume that if the US adopted some other nation's system we would get the same exact results but they don't really reference the cost savings. A better comparison would compare results with the same amount of spending.
Actually, Toro is sharing his 'talking point' with the group.
Elective is different as emergency is different from necessity.
Those who work in the healthcare industry don't need to Google to know what's going on.
Lord help those who qualify for Medicaid.
