We have never declawed any of the cats we have had. I personally think it is cruel plus if your cat gets out it is totally defenseless. The cats we have that clawed on things have gotten bored with it and stopped on their own eventually.

Or don't buy cheap pleather furniture. I have a La-Z-Boy recliner upholstered with top grain leather. My cat claws at it all the time and it doesn't look any worse for the wear. I regularly trim his claws and round them off with a file.

We've also been admonishing him when he does it to set that boundary. So he's learning.

As food becomes more expensive, cats become less pets and more working animals. They will need their claws for killing rodents, especially big rats. Declawing may be forgotten as a bizarre luxury of a bizarre time.
