Calif Shooter Was Banned from Owning Guns

His neighbors reported him for threats and illegal mags to the police but they did nothing. Really, you can't depend on the police for much of anything. I certainly won't rely on them to protect me and mine. I'll go through the motions of calling them if I can to cover myself, but that's about it.

Where I live i've seen these two people, a young male and female, walking down my street fighting and screaming 3 times. I called it in all three times, but the police never got there until way too late. Two druggies....

Yet again, more laws not being enforced. They're not interested in getting society's dregs to come to heel. They're interested in getting productive, law-abiding citizens to let go of this check on government power.

California shooter was barred from owning guns: report

Well it's about time you guys start waking up

A bipartisan measure aimed at improving background checks for gun sales has been introduced in the Senate, after a mass shooting in Texas that officials say might have been prevented if the gunman's conviction on assault charges had been flagged in a national database.

Senators Introduce Bipartisan Deal To Tighten Reporting For Gun Purchases

If only you Republicans were willing before all the death that has happened recently.

The laws are already on the books liar. You regressive stains did nothing.

The reality is you can't stop anyone who is motivated to commit a crime. As much as I am critical of the Canadian apparatus, I am rarely critical of those in uniform who are doing their best, I reserve my dismay for the exploitive covert, anti-Americans and/or the bad apples. You simply cannot in a free society stop everyone who is hellbent on destruction so in general, being critical of police when these crimes happen is not fair in my opinion. Unless there were specific tips, clues and/or reason to charge someone and lock them up before they went on their rampage, it's a fact of life that crime will never be eliminated.

Really, there are laws against every single crime that is committed every day, has that prevented crime from occurring? It's poor logic. "There is crime going on, let's expand the definition of crime and THAT will eradicate it" Huh?

If a guy wants to get his hands on a weapon and go haywire, he will do so. There is no way around it. Preventing the law abiding from their pursuit of liberty doesn't prevent crime, it is a crime in itself.

Dufus, the laws were there, once again the government failed to do its job.

The laws were there. The law failed to uphold them. A judge ordered a criminal turn them in. As expected, the criminal didn’t, and the law did nothing about it, even after repeated calls from neighbors he was shooting them off.

Not so. What will the new bill do?

The bill is meant to "ensure federal and state authorities comply with existing law and accurately report relevant criminal history records" to databases used in gun-purchase background checks. It "penalizes federal agencies who fail to properly report relevant records and incentivizes states to improve their overall reporting" while providing more funding to track domestic violence.

Cornyn said he would introduce legislation to ensure that all federal departments and agencies send conviction records to NICS.

In the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 children and six adults were killed, a measure was introduced in 2013 that would, among other provisions, have tightened penalties on states that do not submit electronic records on firearms eligibility to NICS. The measure died in committee.

While this measure reaches across the partisan aisle, it remains a deal brokered between senators, and there is no indication that House Republicans will be eager to pass it.

So you guys killed the bill and people died. Pat yourselves on the backs republicans.

Nope. Democrats tried to pass a bill in 2013 that would have prevented the government from making such a big mistake but Republicans put a stop to any gun legislation.

Stop being a Republican 2nd amendment douche. No one wants to take your guns away. This won't stop you from getting a gun but it would have stopped the recent shooter who went into that church.

I'm not a republican.

The problem we have is that the thousands of gun laws we have on the books are not enforced.

So fix that before adding any new laws that will be thrown on the pile of existing yet unenforced laws.

Has anyone looked into whether or not these people where prescribed and taking psychotropic drugs by a medical professional prior to the incidents?

If my memory is correct, most of the incidents in recent history involved people who were prescribed those particular drugs prior to the incidents. Yet there's not a whisper about it in any of these discussions that I've seen thus far with regard to these recent shootings.

That's just an NRA talking point coming out of your mouth

No laws could have prevented the tragedy

Sounding another familiar theme, conservative writer David French opined after Orlando: “The gun-control debate is nothing more than a destructive distraction” and asked rhetorically, “Is there a single viable gun-control proposal of the last decade that would keep a committed jihadist from arming himself?”

In the case of Orlando, the answer is a clear “yes.” In Canada, the gunman could not have obtained a license to purchase a firearm because of his history of domestic violence, signs of mental instability and vocal support for terrorist organizations. If gun-shop owners had to notify the FBI when somebody on or previously on one of the terror watch lists purchased a weapon, agents could have investigated and perhaps prevented the attack. And if there were restrictions on magazine size, the shooter would have had to reload more frequently, which would have given clubgoers a better opportunity to escape or disarm the assailant, mitigating the carnage.

Terrorists and criminals aren’t deterred by laws

The NRA’s first public response to the Orlando shooting was an op-ed by Executive Director Chris Cox, in which he stated: “Radical Islamic terrorists are not deterred by gun control laws.” This is the newest iteration of the popular talking point that gun laws cannot work because criminals won’t follow them. As Marco Rubio often proclaimed during the primary campaign: “My skepticism about gun laws is criminals don’t follow the law.”

Applying this logic, why have any laws? If criminals are just going to run red lights, why have traffic penalties? The NRA’s reasoning is a prescription for chaos — and it doesn’t withstand contact with empirical reality.

There’s clear evidence that laws do influence criminal behavior.

5 arguments against gun control — and why they are all wrong

They are fixing the law. Tougher penalties if they don't report a person with mental problems.

What is going to happen to the people in the military who fucked up and didn't tell anyone this guy was nuts? Nothing? Well that needs to be fixed. How about 10 years if you fail to report? Make it so no OOPSYS happen again.

Whatever Rubio believes, there’s clear evidence that laws do influence criminal behavior. One study, for instance, found that over the past two decades, terrorists in the U.S. have largely abandoned bombs. Why? One reason is that in the aftermath of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, federal legislation made it more difficult for consumers to obtain bomb-making ingredients and easier for law enforcement to monitor purchases. This new oversight led terrorists to revamp their tactics, replacing bombs with guns. An investigation by the Trace revealed that 95% of terrorism deathsin the U.S. between January 2002 and August 2015 were caused by firearms.

5 arguments against gun control — and why they are all wrong

I am not a member of the NRA

Laws do not prevent crime.

Laws define unacceptable behaviors and the punishment for those engaging in those behaviors that is all they do.

If we have laws and do not enforce them with the severity warranted we might as well not have any laws.

You want to enforce laws directed at criminals go for it. I want that too, but I refuse to be held responsible for crimes other people commit.

So let's do this

Commit any crime while in possession of a firearm even if that fire arm was never drawn automatic 25 years no parole

Commit any crime and draw a firearm during the commission of that crime even if the gun is not fired 35 years no parole

Commit any crime and fire a gun during the commission of that crime and no one gets injured or killed 50 years no parole

Commit a crime and injure or kill with a firearm during the commission of that crime LIFE no parole or the death penalty.
