In 2010 in South Fulton, Tennessee, each household paid the local fire department a yearly fee of $75.00. That year, Gene Cranick’s house accidentally caught fire. But the fire department refused to come because Cranick had forgotten to pay his yearly fee, leaving his home in ashes. Observers across the political spectrum agreed―some with horror and some with enthusiasm―that this revealed the true face of libertarianism. But libertarianism did not always require callous indifference to the misfortunes of others.

Modern libertarianism began with Friedrich Hayek’s admirable corrective to the Depression-era vogue for central economic planning. It resisted oppressive state power. It showed how capitalism could improve life for everyone. Yet today, it’s a toxic blend of anarchism, disdain for the weak, and rationalization for environmental catastrophe. Libertarians today accept new, radical arguments―which crumble under scrutiny―that justify dishonest business practices and COVID deniers who refuse to wear masks in the name of “freedom.”

Libertarianism emerged in the mid-nineteenth century with an unwavering commitment to progressive causes, from women's rights and the fight against slavery to anti-colonialism and Irish emancipation. Today, this movement founded on the principle of individual liberty finds itself divided by both progressive and reactionary elements vying to claim it as their own. The Individualists is the untold story of a political doctrine continually reshaped by fierce internal tensions, bold and eccentric personalities, and shifting political circumstances.

In the 1930s the entire capitalist world, from the attempted fascist putsch in the United States in 1934 to the British royal family throwing the fascist salute, from the philosophy of the "superman" to the momentarily surrendered Europe to the Reich, was pregnant with fascism, saw in fascism the guiding star of the "crusade against Bolshevism".
If you realize this point, you will understand the entire history of the 20th century and what is happening today - the revenge of fascism in the West.

It's much more accurate to say libertarians were corrupted when they began supporting trump. Delusion and greed are certainly part of supporting trump, but it also includes so much more that bastardized libertarianism.
