Gil Gerard, best known for playing the titular hero in the NBC sci-fi favorite "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," has died at the age of 82.

Gerard's wife Janet announced his passing on Facebook: "Early this morning Gil — my soulmate — lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer. From the moment when we knew something was wrong to his death this morning was only days. No matter how many years I got to spend with him it would have ever been enough. Hold the ones you have tightly and love them fiercely."

Gerard also shared his own statement, written before his death, which Janet posted on Facebook: "My life has been an amazing journey. The opportunities I've had, the people I've met and the love I have given and received have made my 82 years on the planet deeply satisfying. My journey has taken me from Arkansas to New York to Los Angeles, and finally, to my home in North Georgia with my amazing wife, Janet, of 18 years. It's been a great ride, but inevitably one that comes to a close as mine has. Don't waste your time on anything that doesn't thrill you or bring you love. See you out somewhere in the cosmos."

Sounds like a pretty cool guy. May he R.I.P.

Apparently was a real decent guy. I had a relative write him a letter back in the day asking for an autographed photo and they ended up writing back and forth several times. He did that stuff himself instead of having a publicist do it.

But I also heard he was kind of a dick to his co-stars, especially in the Second Season when they reformatted the show.

Maybe the two together indicates he was a control freak. IDK.

The first year was better to me. CGI was a few years away from massive improvements in space and live action animation.

To be fair, the second season was pretty awful. It was more geared towards kiddies, more trying to cash in on that Star Wars action.

He probably knew they had no show without him. They only retained him and Erin Gray. They even fired Mel Blanc as the voice of the little robot for a time.

I'm just sad he didn't live long enough to see the new Buck Rogers movie.

Yeah, they're trying to "get it together" to get a story written for the movie.

I just hope they pick the CORRECT person to portray the characters.

That's all before my time. I don't think I have ever even seen that show in syndication. I just know I have had relatives talk about the letters back and forth even though my relative was just hounding down autographs they thought they may be able sell one day.

Unfortunately, having only run two seasons, it didn't have enough episodes for syndication.

The reason why Star Trek became part of the culture is because it had three seasons and it was rediscovered in syndication in the 70's.
