re: no. 3 It's actually Pryor I'm fairly certain. Not a fan, but am really anal about respecting people by getting their names right. :)

I might not argue with he names, but the order is off.

George Carlin is the greatest standup comedian of all time. His career spanned several generations. Some of his material has become iconic.

I'd make the list:

1) George Carlin
2) Richard Pryor
3) Robin Williams
4) Henny Youngman
5) Bill Cosby

Quantity doesn't equal quality, bub. Justin Bieger sold out big places. Bleah.
He's a singer, these are comedians.

I saw Dice Clay at the Inglewood forum and I've seen several of Kinison's shows.

The reason they fill up concert halls, is because half of their show, they're playing rock.

Kinison played guitar and Dice played drums.

I still believe no one pushed the envelope further and more often than they did.

What?? George Carlin was arrested for obscenity charges and is the only standup comic to ever have a case heard before the US Supreme Court. I think THAT is pretty much the edge of the envelope.

YOUR LIFE MAY BE IN RUINS BUT SUICIDE is not the answer, suicide just takes you from the frying pan into the fire for sure!!!

I once attempted suicide. On other occasions I came very close to death. During none of my experiences did I see a frying pan or a fire.

But I did see something beautiful. And it made perfect sense.

I was on the knife-edge of death. And I saw nothing of which you purport.

You are a fart in the wind to me...

Or at least a very good argument on your part?

I was shocked, surprised, amazed to hear that he was dead.

To hear that it might have been suicide is just absolutely nuts!!!

He's the kind of entertainer who's supposed to die at 93!!!

He was fighting many personal demons. He was just recently back in rehab. For some, addictions can be very difficult to break, especially when they are fueled by depression. I don't understand depression in the clinical sense, but I am certain it is real. I went through a faze of depression after my wife died, but it was not the same as clinical depression where people cannot seem to get out of it.

"I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains. "

Very sad news. Much more support is needed for those suffering depression.

James Lipton was interviewed and called Williams a genius .. high praise, indeed.
