Port workers strike starts across the East and Gulf Coasts

Updated 1:29 AM EDT, Tue October 1, 2024

Nearly 50,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) are on strike Tuesday against the nation’s East and Gulf Coast ports, according to the union, choking off the flow of many of the nation’s imports and exports in what could become America’s most disruptive work stoppage in decades.

The strike, which was also confirmed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as the Port of Virginia, began at midnight. There appears to be a wide gap between the union’s demands and the offer of the United States Maritime Alliance, which uses the acronym USMX. The maritime alliance represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned; as well as terminal operators and port authorities.

Houston is the is the largest exporter for shipping dry goods in America.

The Houston Ship Channel complex and its more than 200 private and eight public terminals, collectively known as the Port of Houston, is the nation’s largest port for waterborne tonnage and an essential economic engine for the Houston region, the state of Texas, and the U.S. A 2022 study by Martin Associates reports that business activity at the Port of Houston supports 1.54M jobs throughout the state of Texas and 3.37M jobs nationwide.

This activity helps generate more than $439B in statewide economic value and $906B in nationwide economic value. Moreover, the Houston Ship Channel contributes nearly $10.6B in state and local tax revenue and $62.8B in national tax revenue.

  • 5th ranked U.S. container port by total TEUs
  • Largest Gulf Coast container port, handling 73% of U.S. Gulf Coast container traffic
  • Largest Texas port with 97% market share in containers

crossbody said: Just as Jehu remained in power for 28 years, Trump likewise must be in power for 28 years. Trump was in power running the Trump Enterprise for 20 years and president for 4 years. He is still due 4 more years in power as president. That is why the democrats throwing everything at him including the kitchen sink cannot stop him- they cannot stop God.

The union says it has continued to talk with the USMX, just not in face-to-face negotiations. Ahead of the strike, it said management knows what it is demanding in order to get a deal done and that any strike would be management’s fault, not the union’s. It said its demands are reasonable given the level of profits in the shipping industry.

Daggett, wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the words “The Docks are Ours,” addressed the strikers outside of the Port of New York and New Jersey, in a video posted to an ILA Facebook page.

“I want to tell you all what you’re doing is right. This is going down in history, what we’re doing here,” he said. He recalled the union’s last strike when he and other union members were on strike for three months to earn an extra 80 cents an hour.

“Now they’re making billions and billions of dollars, through the pandemic, when all of us were working. Who’s the greedy ones here?” he said. “We’re’ going to get show them…because nothing’s going to move without us.”

NotfooledbyW said: If God and Don Trump are for the USMX. maritime alliance that represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned; Well then fuck God and Don Trump if they are favoring foreign price gouging billionaires over American workers.

These people think they will get a FAIR contract? In Biden's USA? They will be lucky if they are not all replaced by Haitians working for one-forth the money.

Maybe Kammy will send in some of those missing 300,000 children to take the jobs.

Democrats have been kissing unions asses for decades, but they still can't prevent them from striking. The bottom line is, Democrats only care about union votes, not their well being. MAGA

The 5 billion a day clock started ticking yesterday when port operations were wound down.

JPMorgan estimated that for each day the ports are shut down, it will take roughly six days to clear the backlog. Analysts pegged the economic impact of a strike to about $5 billion per day, according to a research note published earlier this month.

Hey dems....Tic-Toc, tic-toc.

I was checking to see what things I use on a daily basis, and most of them are produced in the US. Paper towels, toilet paper, dog and cat food, cheese, milk, eggs...

The port strike will probably mean truckers will get in a lot of overtime.

"not being shipped" means more supply here. capitalism 101 means lower prices here.

eventually wall st will get the message and become less dependent upon these fragile "just in time" supply chains.

i support the longshoremen, of course. "the workman is worthy of his pay." 1 timothy 5:18

Reports claim that a 50% wage increase was offered and rejected last night.

Being a right to work state at least the workers can be replaced at The Port of Virginia.

Figure they have about 2 weeks before people really start feeling any potential impact.

At that point the offer of 50% to them over 6 years being rejected will make them the bad guys.

This affects all goods from Africa, Europe, and South America.

Goods from Asia and India are a West Coast thing.

Most goods....like fresh produce are 10 days from field to table.

That's gonna get longer.

Recession sucks....so does inflation.

What if the west coast unions do a "sympathy slowdown" for the East Coast brethren?

Will they? Won't the lack of goods in warehouses place a high demand on trucking and a low supply on goods? Thus, putting a shortage of goods for trucking to move?

Yeah, that sounds right.
