He's the one who defied the convention of the day and put the man on the roster...They're the ones who took the chance...He's the one who would've eaten the big shit sandwich had Robinson been a bust.

Although Jackie Robinson was in fact the best black player available for the job, he ultimately wasn't the one who broke the "color barrier"...That distinction belongs to the Branch Rickey.

Jackie Robinson is the hero because he had to take a lot of shit and do it as stoically as anybody could imagine.
 
No argument that Robinson had to put up with a lot of shit...But so did Rickey.

If he had decided to bring on Satchel Paige as the first black major leaguer, Robinson would be just another "ordinary" face in Cooperstown.
