The more-than-80,000 sexual-abuse claims filed in the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy case represent only a "fraction" of the members victimized by pedophiles, a lawyer for the survivors said.
During the youth group's chapter 11 reorganization, doubt has been cast, including by a consultant for the official survivors committee, on how the number of sexual abuse claims has grown to more than 82,200 during the bankruptcy from fewer than 2,000 before. But Kenneth Rothweiler, a victims' lawyer who will also sit on a seven-member committee helping to oversee a proposed $2.7 billion trust to compensate victims, testified Wednesday that an "epidemic of pedophilia" explains the surge.
"I think there are multiples" of the more than 80,000, Mr. Rothweiler said. Many men hadn't come forward because they were afraid and ashamed, he said.
