An inmate put to death last month in South Carolina's second firing squad execution was conscious and likely in extreme pain for up to a minute after the bullets missed their target, attorneys allege.

Dr. Jonathan Arden, a forensic pathologist hired by Mikal Mahdi's attorneys, alleged that the execution on April 11 was a "massive botch" after he completed an analysis of the autopsy findings, according to the pathologist's report, which was filed Thursday with a letter to the state Supreme Court.

Mahdi, 42, was convicted in the 2004 killings of an off-duty police officer in Calhoun County, South Carolina, and a convenience store clerk in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was sentenced to death for the murder of the officer and life in prison for the clerk's murder.

Arden's analysis alleged that only two bullets struck Mahdi, both low in the torso and well below the heart, contradicting protocol which requires three shots to the heart for rapid death.

The partial damage to Mahdi’s heart allowed continued circulation, leading Arden to determine that Mahdi likely remained conscious for up to 60 seconds after being shot.

Witnesses to the execution, according to The AP, heard Mahdi cry out as the shots were fired, groan again some 45 seconds later and let out one last low moan just before he appeared to draw his final breath at 75 seconds.

Comment:
What caliber gun was used?
If they used a shotgun slug or buckshot it would not matter if they missed the bullseye a little.
They should use fentanyl, because we know it works.
It's what killed George Floyd.

...Or...did they really 'miss' at all?
Perhaps they just colluded to give a cop-killer a hard death~

Gee, so now we cannot deport criminals, cannot refuse importing criminals and cannot even execute criminals. In all my life, I never heard of a botched firing squad execution.

They are worried this bum might have suffered a bit upon being executed!

I wonder how much the two people he murdered suffered?

somebody was a bad shot or they need to use a scope, apparently

They should use a vacuum chamber for execution.
It is painless.
The person just falls asleep.
errr..not exactly. Vacuum is the absence of pressure..thus the body would basically boil off and explode.
A pretty painful and messy death, I'd imagine.

You do not, in fact, instantly freeze or explode—heat transfers too slowly for that. Nor does your blood immediately boil, thanks to the resilience of your cutaneous system. No, no, you have good ten to fifteen seconds with which to freak the fuck out before you begin to black out, and a solid two minutes or so before you fully expire.
You only get fifteen seconds, because that is roughly how long it takes deoxygenated blood to circulate from your lungs to your brain. See, when you’re placed in a vacuum, the gas exchange process works in reverse—your lungs actually pull oxygen out of the body and dump it back into the lungs where it’s exhaled, which only serves to hasten the onset of hypoxia. Holding your breath doesn’t help either. The pressure differences in and outside of the body cause a severe form of the bends, similar to what divers experience when ascending too quickly. This will likely cause your lungs to rupture. In fact, you will remain conscious for up to a half minute if you exhale within the first few seconds.

If only they were ALL botched. If it were up to me, I'd feed them to a pack of wild dogs. :dunno:

Sorry, no, Moondoggy. What are you, a graduate of 4th grade physics?

All they need to do is lower the air pressure to that similar to near the top of Mt. Everest. People routinely die up there in the Death Zone for insufficient air above about 20,000 feet and can only survived higher up on bottled oxygen.

Easier still, just switch him over from normal air to pure nitrogen. Air is already 78% nitrogen. Without the other 19% being oxygen, or at around 16-17%, you pass out and die.

Yup...the nitrogen thing is best.

My post was about pure vacuum..and correct.

I have to challenge the story. They use experienced shooters and of course there will be a physical reaction to being shot. More than likely, he went into shock when hit and wasn't aware of much.

I did altitude chamber training in the AF.
They simulate different altitudes and they do dexterity tests.
They want the trainees to know the symptoms of hypoxia, and how to wear your oxygen mask properly.
At about 20k feet when you take your mask off, your vison goes black and white and you have tunnel vison, and your body tingles, and you need to have someone to put your mask on you.
Anyway they said with hypoxia the person just falls asleep and painlessly dies.
