The days of "cannon fodder" are over for advanced Western countries.

In the Old Days, we had a military draft and could bring in hordes of teenagers who were crazy enough to follow orders to take out a "machine gun nest," with their commanders knowing that a substantial number of them would end up being "casualties."

Those days are gone.

We have PFC's who are married with children, and every soldier, sailor, and airman represents a significant investment by the taxpayers. WHEN (not "if") we put Boots on the Ground, they will have specific objectives with high probability of success, and they will withdraw immediately after the objective is met. There will be casualties, but nowhere near the numbers we saw in Vietnam and prior engagements.

The current delay is in figuring out which possible engagements would have the greatest impact and probability of success. Any "occupations" will be limited scale and duration.

This is all partly because of the excessive demands of the Democrats and Media, who will treat each casualty as proof of defeat. Rational thought is not high on their asset list.

I haven't seen any evidence of US planning that is likely to achieve a high probability of success in Iran, particularly because Iranians have been gaming this very conflict since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
