This the reason Putin invaded, was because he saw that under Biden, Ukraine would be admitted into NATO, where under Trump that never would have happened.

Putin wants the Ukraine.

He had the leader of the Ukraine poisoned in 2004. Yes, 18 years ago. That's how long Putin has been undermining the Ukraine. The Ukraine is poor because of Putin. Yes, it was poorer in the 1990s than countries like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, but the Ukraine's GDP per capita was rising rising from 2000 onwards, but because it didn't join the EU it was open to attacks from Putin, and he's been undermining that country for a long, long time.

He doesn't want the Ukraine to be in NATO because he wants it to be a part of Russia, ie, the former USSR. Look at Belarus. Doing what it's told by Russia down to a T.

I've always known what Putin was after. This thread was about Bolton, the premise that Putin was just waiting for Trump to take the US out of NATO.

My observation was simply that Bolton's reasoning consists of 2 components. Trump in the WH, and US in NATO.

Change one component, it changes Putin's calculus. To that extent, I agree with Bolton. His prediction on which component would change was wrong, but Putin did invade...

Putin looks at NATO forces in Ukraine the same way we would look at Chinese or Russian forces based in Mexico. Not friendly.

That is probably true, at least aspirationally, but NATO admission is a very complicated and time consuming process.

Ukraine is putting up a hell of a defense though, and is racking up an impressive list of aircraft and armor destroyed. This has not unfolded the way Putin wanted. Russia still completely outclasses Ukraine, but the fast-blast into Kiev and installation of a puppet gov't in a Xi-brokered peace deal is looking less and less possible. Ukraine isn't quite the pushover that Putin was expecting.

it wasn’t up to a president who joins nato. Ukraine’s membership has been pendin since 2008, they had not met the requirements for full member
