I was surprised when I read your post and then went and researched it. You are right the South had many bros enlist in the Army of the South. Never knew that and my Mom never said anything about it. You would think it would be good to know about the past.

Kind of like the "Lost Cause" mythology of the South. Everyone tries to repaint war to make themselves look heroic when more often than not, they were just a bunch of scared guys trying to stay alive.

Human nature, being what it is, people who live through something like this feel they need to make it about something greater.

Certainly, the "resistance" was overplayed by many. It must be pointed out, however, that the majority of Jewish children were quietly, discreetly protected by eternally anonymous French, for example. The majority were not pro-Vichy or fascist, but they were powerless, hostages. The activists (mostly Communists) who killed Germans mostly brought fierce retribution on innocent others without seriously affecting Nazi war efforts. It was not easy or obvious to run out into the countryside for an armed struggle. It should also be remembered that the Germans were not the same with the French as they were with the Poles, Russians, etc. For most of the occupation, most of the Wehrmacht there was relatively restrained and somewhat easy to tolerate in daily life, not much worse than a police force.
