Already answered. "First hand" is your arbitrary construct. After that, we are forced to decide if we trust the conveyors of this first hand account. Was it really a first hand account or did somebody just claim it was? Then there are the translators. the political officials, the church officials. Such items would pass through dozens of hands to reach us 2000 years later, each with the possibility of altering or dilution. That's why it's silly to assign such importance to an alleged first-hand account. In the end, you have to choose to believe or not what somebody said somebody said somebody said.
