While I was trying to get information on the who built the Key Bridge, I found an article from 1973, about a law suit against this same company, for the Silver Bridge collapse in Ohio.

The bridge was mounted on the pilings with steel bolts. The sudden sideways load and shock probably sheered them. Bridges are stressed for longitudinal strength, not shearing stress from the side.
