‘Beautiful Day for a Celebration’ Turns to Carnage as Driver Kills 11 in Vancouver

We can't lock up all mentally ill people because they might do something bad. like in this incident.

That's been tried in America for years and it's only resulted in America setting records on murders with cars and murders with guns.

Rather, we're just going to have to take our licks when one mentally ill offender slips through the cracks.

Socially responsible precautions don't work perfectly. They're still just the best choice by comparison.

We should discuss the appropriate methods on how to reduce the chances of more crimes of this nature.

This thread is most appropriate because it won't stir American resentment to get in the way of their true feelings of loyalty to Maga.

When you have a policy of NOT locking people up, when they are dangerous to themselves and others, then they are not "slipping though the cracks" you are CHOOSING to let them hurt themselves or others.

.
Have you ever heard of a murderer that wasn't looney ?
.
My reference was to another thread in which a child arranged soda cans in the shape of what could be considered an AR-15. The duck was equating it to some sinister idea that the kid was a future mass shooter and suggesting mental health counseling. On reflection, I agree that I should have exercised more sensitivity to the event in Vancouver. My apologies.

Driving along earlier today, the news on the radio said the guy was known to have mental health issues. These events need concrete blocks at road ends etc.. to protect folk. As soon as the first nutter drove into a crowd and so it appeared in the news, it gave others that idea.
Concrete barricades would probably have been effective in this case, but this nut job could have done as much damage by driving down any busy sidewalk. These tragedies are the result of a permissive modern society. You would think that with more freedom, people would become more calm and content, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

We have professionals working constantly on finding socially responsible answers, and at great expense to Canadian citizens, but they're not perfect and so inevitably this can happen.

We can only feel good knowing the money is well spent. Sharing borders with your country, we could easily become another American story of failing the poor and middle class.

Capitalism works in Canada! But it's not without many socialist innovations that make it work for all the people.

.....

Do you really? Cause that is not what we do here. Here we let them roam free, until htey commit a crime, or kill themselves.

Then we do something.

HOw many people are locked up in canada to protect themselves, from their own madness?

Don't blame America exclusively just because the method of killing by car originated there. Canada must accept at least part of the responsibility by ensured we're doing our best on social policy that will address this incident.

What would America do?

What if it wasn't an Audi but instead a S&W or an AR? What if it was 20 or more 5 year olds?

Google incarceration rates and stop pissing in your own nest.

There can be joy and happiness in this for you. It's doesn't have to be all anger and resentment over having to deal with the comparisons.
Unlike you, I find no joy in tragedies. Your hatred for all things American defines you and your response to my post proves it. You're a king-sized hypocrite in that you would be and have before, made hay over tragedies exactly like this in the US. My condolences to the victims and their families. You can pound sand.

That is such a sad thing.

And they knew this guy was loony.

At first, no one found it suspicious that the black Audi SUV had gone around a portable barrier into a street packed with festivalgoers lining up at food trucks and checking out artisans’ wares.
It was about 8 p.m. Saturday, and Apl.de.ap, a Filipino American rapper and a founding member of the Black Eyed Peas, had finished a concert that was the signature event of the Lapu Lapu Festival organized by the Filipino community in Vancouver, British Columbia.
At first the large SUV crawled through the crowd, and Kris Pangilinan, who was selling clothing at a booth, assumed that it had been let in to help another merchant load up his wares and close shop.
Then, it started to speed up.
“He sideswiped someone where the vendors are,” Mr. Pangilinan said on Sunday after a largely sleepless night. “All of a sudden I hear this exhaust and the sound of the acceleration of the vehicle. Then, boom: He hits dozens of people.”
Shortly afterward, police officers were commandeering the tables in Mr. Pangilinan’s tent to use as makeshift stretchers.
At least 11 people, ranging in age from 5 to 65, were killed in the episode, which Prime Minister Mark Carney described as a “car-ramming attack.” Dozens more were injured, the interim chief of the Vancouver Police Department, Steve Rai, said on Sunday, warning that it was likely that some of them may die.
...
Late Sunday, the authorities said that prosecutors had charged Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30, with eight counts of second-degree murder. Further charges were anticipated, they said.
Mr. Rai, the police chief, declined earlier to discuss the suspect’s motive, but said that the police previously had “substantive contact with him over mental health issues.” David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, said that the driver had acted “intentionally.”
...

Since when is first degree intentional homicide "second degree" murder? Only in Canada.

Is there an investigation into how this guy "slpped though the cracks"? Who was the last health care professional that saw this guy?
Good questions!

You've carelessly started to think of what could have been done. I believe the news story has the answers.

We just need to just “take our licks” rather than lock up mentally ill? You’d think differently if it were YOUR five-year-old who was killed.

I'm sorry for your bad feeling, but we can't have a constructive discussion and just ignore similar slaughters in America by car or by gun.

Neither the Audi or the AR defines the illness or the crime. Nor do they define the remedy!

The fact that libs want to go easy on dangerous people rather than protect innocent people is the problem. That’s the same reason they’re fighting to get the illegal alien gangbanger wifebeater back into the country,

Not about America, duck. This is Canada--you know the country you crow about all the time. It is a tragedy and what you would consider a failure by gov't--indeed the current admin had it happened in the US. Face it--you're a commie troll who hates America. Everyone else on this board knows it and your response to this CANADIAN tragedy proves it.

That is a lie. Murders went up AFTER the courts PROHIBITED precautionary confinement of dangerous mentally ill people. NOW they have to be an IMMINENT danger to themselves or others (e.g., "I'm going to kill someone right now.")

The point is Lisa, I wouldn't and don't think differently. In lay terms that you will understand, we don't allow knee jerk reactions to set social policy.

I think that sort of reaction indicates the cause of America's failure to even consider rehabilitation or any other socially responsible actions.

Lock him up, execute him, what would jesus do?

This is the perfect opportunity for Americans to discuss the problem!

It doesn't reflect directly on America's failure that you've mentioned.
