DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) -- Bangladeshis went to the polls Monday in an election that civil rights groups hailed as a return to democracy after almost two years of an army-backed government, but one many citizens viewed with a tinge of apprehension.
Black and white fliers festooned the country, dangling from power lines or strung up on ropes tied from one balcony to another. Party volunteers made last minute pitches to undecided voters, urging them to vote for 'Boat' or 'Sheaf of Paddy.' In a country where less than half the population is literate, political parties use symbols to make it easier for voters to make their choice.
