It says the US pays 3.61% of GDP towards its military. More than other countries in NATO.

But the reality is most of this isn't NATO spending.

Direct funding of NATO. The US spends 16.35% of direct NATO funding. Again, more than any other country except Germany. However Germany has a population of 83 million, compared to the US's 330 million, and is PAYING THE SAME. Clearly Germany is paying more. Clearly the EU is paying WAY MORE.

The EU pays 56.4% of NATO funding, with a 447 million population, compared to the US's 330 million and 16.35% of funding. It's a clear winner who's paying the most direct funding.

Part of US military funding is healthcare. The UK, for example, doesn't need this because it has the NHS. So the funding is there, it's just posted under a different column.

For the US this makes up more than 1% of funding. The War in Iraq is still costing the US a lot of money, nothing to do with NATO. A lot of US deployments have nothing to do with NATO.

So, while the US shows how much money it spends on the military, it's not comparable to most of the EU which doesn't go around the world warring (and profiting from war)
