My wife generally has little sense of romance or appreciation. I stopped 'going the xtra mile' for her after about year 4 of our marriage. It's more painful to have 'no expectations' than to put my heart into something, only to have it smashed beyond reason.
"Yuk...that's too spicy"
"I don't like that card you made - you used up the ink in my favourite pen!!"
"Why did you spread rose petals all over the floor and bed - you've made a mess!"
"I can't believe you spent money on flowers...geesh. We needed a new box of Q-Tips"
"Dang it - you did the dishes and vacuumed WRONG!"
And also; why the hell should I do anything/buy anything for my WIFE? She's not my mother.

But I'm not bitter
