Hurricane Ike Bearing Down On Tanker Adrift Without Power; Crew Of 22 Aboard Freighter 90 Miles SE Of Galveston

Galveston, TX (AHN) - A fully loaded 584-foot-long petroleum coke carrier has lost power and is adrift with a crew of 22 in the Gulf of Mexico, 90 miles southeast of Galveston.
Coast Guard officials say that high winds and heavy seas make a rescue operation by small boat or helicopter impossible.
As Hurricane Ike bears down on the Cypriot freighter Antalina, the Coast Guard said the crew aboard the 580-foot vessel will have to ride the waves to shallower water. They are hopeful that the ship can then drop anchor and weather the storm.
Ships generally prefer to ride out big storms at sea rather than in port. The vessel had left Port Arthur, Texas to head out to sea to do just that, but lost power and are unable to steer and have no propulsion.
The freighter is drifting southwest. It was built in 1984.
