• They say he appears to be a college-aged male.
• He fled the scene into the woods.
• They found a "high-powered" bolt action rifle there.
• They are processing other evidence while expanding an all out search.

30-06 is good for that sort of distance easy....usually 250 yards for most sportsmen....but it requires some sort of steadying device to make that kind of shot.

It's a popular hunting rifle for those out west in mountain regions....in the Southeast you don't want anything that shoots that far as there are too many houses and people....so they use a .45 cal or something along those lines. I haven't done any hunting here in the South. Only have the 30-06.

The effective range of the 30-06 is 800 yards. Famed Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock used an off the shelf Winchester model 70 in 30-06 in Vietnam, and regularly made kill shots beyond that range.

If you adjust the scope for 100 yards, a 10 year old with no shooting skills could make a kill shot at 200 yards with any model rifle chambered in that round.

Yes, you are correct. Very easy to hit a target at 200 yards with that round.

.30-06 is a very stout round. Bigger than a .308. This round is often used for big game, like buffalo. It starts to hurt my shoulder after about 5 shots from a bolt action with .30-06.
