They were German made, confiscated and ended up in civilians hands after the War...
Our soldiers used 30-06. Ammunition swapping is not usually the case in wartime.

Rechambering is fairly common.

That is something that definitely leaves a trail....
Sure machining was once fairly common but that was 40-50 years ago.
Today finding someone who could actually make a receiver like that is uncommon....and the few who have done stuff like this have spent more time in jail than out.

I'm scared to even think about machining a suppressor or sights....(easiest parts to machine and quasi legal)

Even refurbishing as a gunsmith with a class 3 license is almost impossible because you can't get the license.

Honestly it’s not that difficult to hit a target just 150 yards away with a rifle. It’s basic shooting.

30-06 is good for that sort of distance easy....usually 250 yards for most sportsmen....but it requires some sort of steadying device to make that kind of shot.

It's a popular hunting rifle for those out west in mountain regions....in the Southeast you don't want anything that shoots that far as there are too many houses and people....so they use a .45 cal or something along those lines. I haven't done any hunting here in the South. Only have the 30-06.

Well, someone posted a Mauser in 30-06 caliper for sale....
So apparently it's been done. It is not original condition but for many that doesn't matter. They just want a working rifle. The historic accuracy value is not relevant.
