It’s about the same. It seems worse because of social media.

I don't know. It's not just politics, it was also the divide over the covid response where some were saying the ant-vaxers should be put into camps until it blew over. You have some now saying Trump supporters should be detained for four years after Trump leaves office. These things would never happen of course but the fact that some are saying it and wanting it is disturbing.

Then there's Israel and Gaza that has sparked a renaissance in anti-semitism. The fight over illegal immigration. Shit, it's gotten so bad that decorative cotton plants and manicured lawns have become symbols of white supremacy for f***'s sake.

You're probably right about social media being a factor but not in the way you're probably thinking. If the internet and social media are a factor then I would say that they don't make it seem worse, they actually made it worse. Not only does it allow you to see all the hate, it allows you to project hate and get it to a lot more people in a shorter span of time. What happens when one sees more hate directed at his/her political party or group every day? It ramps up the anger and resentment. That's why people do it in the first place.

In short, I think we're seeing and hearing a lot more of the vitriol because there's a lot more of it. But anyway, I don't believe the assassination attempt was staged. That's just conspiracy theory nonsense.

Well the would-be-assassin was a registered republican. It strains understanding that someone would volunteer to get rubbed out to help someone win an election but on the other hand, the MAGA cult strains understanding as well.
