Chicago Teens Charged With Murder in Fight







(CBS/AP) Prosecutors have charged three teenagers with first-degree murder in the beating death of a Chicago student who was walking home from school.

Family members believe the victim, 16-year-old Derrion Albert, was fatally beaten Thursday for refusing to join a gang. But some witnesses say he was a bystander who was swept into a violent fight.

CBS News station WBBM in Chicago identified the suspects as Silvanus Shannon, 19; Eric Carson, 16; and Eugene Riley, 18, all of Chicago.

A local minister told WBBM-TV he felt "outrage" after the incident.

"They should be outraged that a young man with great potential has lost his life to foolishness," the Rev. Renaldo Kyles said.

After Chicago police increased its presence at the school, some children said they're scared about getting there, not what happens inside.

It would be interesting to know if these three teens had ever arrested before for vilence and if they ever did time in juvinille detention. Two are now considered adults and face life in prison.

I have to admit I didn't picture anything that bad. But this violence in the teen population is an epidemic in the US. I think Great Britain too. One dead and four others as good as dead. For what?

Nothing tangible to you or I.

Where I grew up it was common for kids from the same neighborhood to run together and occasionally fight with kids from other neighborhoods at house parties on weekends and such but it never approached "gang" level violence or complete pandomonium in the streets like we saw in that video.

Funny I thought Obama stopped this when he was reaching out to the community? He had to fixed it to go from that to President. Chicago must be the safest city in American because Obama fixed it right. Just like he is going to fix America. YAY

Don't be an idiot. Violence and gangs exist in pretty much every major city in the country and that isn't very likely to change.

One thing that I noticed in the movie is that there was one guy who was standing in the middle of the street who rised a large board up in the air and was going to bring it down on the dead kid...but then he thought about it and turned away.

Good choice.

This is the hard lesson some students at Fenger High School have to deal with after a day of learning. For them it's a hard lesson of reality on the streets.

Thursday after school, two rival gangs got into a fight three blocks from the high school.

In all four students were beaten in that melee -- one was released from the hospital Friday morning.

While police continue their investigation, some students say they don't want to go back to Fenger next week.

Rival gang members have been fighting for a month -- and each time one of their fellow classmates is injured.

No knives and no guns were used in Thursday's fight. Just fists, feet and boards.

Derrion Albert, 16, was struck in the head by one of those boards.

Seconds later the honor student hit the pavement. That&#8217;s when witnesses, who are other high school students, say gangbangers began stomping on and punching Albert.

These children are the byproducts of one of the most liberal cities and school systems in America - broken homes included.
