This thread prompts a few thoughts in my tiny brain. As a general proposition I do not recognize pride in something over which a person has no control. I was born in the U.S., and I'm a U.S. citizen so from that standpoint I take no pride in that empty fact.
However, I have done quite a bit to contribute to society. I joined the Army when it was my time to do so, served honorably, I have always obeyed the law and paid my taxes and I've done nothing to denigrate or diminish this country. I'm proud of that.
The discussions surrounding the MAGA slogan are worth having. Is America great; was it ever great; is it true that something had to happen to (try to) make America great AGAIN?
The country that I grew up in was pretty ******* great. To be ludicrous for a moment and recalling the Boy Scout pledge, MOST Americans were trustworthy, loyal, helpful, courteous, kind, obedient and respectful of authority, generally brave, and reverent within their own religious idiom. This is not self-serving B.S. It is the society that I grew up in (pardon the ending preposition).
An example comes up. In the last couple years of WWII, there were a couple hundred POW camps spread around the U.S., with enemy soldiers quartered here because there was no place overseas that could take them. Large numbers of them ended up interacting with Americans, mainly farmers and a few others in food production. Almost every first person account indicates that the Americans who interacted with these POW's treated them with consideration, respect, and kindness, even knowing that they and their comrades had taken up arms against their (the Americans') sons, friends, and neighbors.
That's pretty ******* great. Would that happen today? Would that happen in any other country on earth? Would that happen in a Muslim country? Do Muslims even take POW's, except as hostages that they can use to extort money and exchanges from their adversaries?
And yet that was not extraordinary at the time. American people were like that. There were ass-holes, of course, but Americans were generally like that.
A lot of "us" are doing our best to make America great again. But half the country denies that it was ever great, and are only looking to see what they can get for free, and whom they can get to pay for it. They revel in empty claims about how terrible America was to women and POC's, ignoring the fact that every other country under the sun did/does the same. **** all of yinz. I hope you never win another election - except in NYC, where you deserve exactly what you will get.
