AP Fact Check: Obama didn’t have family separation policy!

President Donald Trump is falsely asserting that the federal policy that split migrant families at the border was practiced by his predecessor, Barack Obama, as well.

The Obama and Trump administrations operated under the same immigration laws but the “zero tolerance” policy that drove children from their parents was Trump’s. […]

The president is correct, however, in saying that photos of children in holding cells were misrepresented online as showing the effects of Trump’s immigration policy. …

At least Jeh Johnson, Obama's DHS, and the man who enforced Obama's policy was more honest and pragmatic about the situation than the finger pointing, blame gaming AP:

DHS Sec. Jeh Johnson: I Freely Admit We Detained Children, It Was Necessary

Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, said the Obama administration attempted to keep “quiet” about how many unaccompanied minors were crossing the border and that children were being held in detention centers.

“There were large numbers of people coming in,” Cuellar said in an interview with CNN on Saturday.

“The Obama administration was trying to keep this quiet.”

According to the Washington Post, nearly 70,000 unaccompanied minors were apprehended at the border in 2014.

The problem that people have been pointing to is NOT unaccompanied minors. It is the cold blooded decision to separate young children from their parents when the parents are detained. THAT is the issue and has nothing to do with how Obama handled things. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Do you have the same attitude regarding AMERICAN kids of AMERICAN parents, when they are arrested ? Thousands of these separations occur every day across America.

And those separations last years. Sometimes for the entire lifetime of the parent. What about the AMERICAN kids whose parents are executed, who will NEVER see their parents again ? I don't hear any dissent. No concern for those kids ? What are they to you ? Chopped liver ?

What I was referring to and what this thread is about have nothing to do with DACA, that I am aware of.

Yup and if there are no relatives these kids go into foster care.

Those kids would never be allowed to be with their parents once those parents were arrested.

Its the law.
