The short answer being that what AOC is tip-toeing around is her saying that under her administration, China has nothing to fear from the USA and they can take Taiwan at will.

Previous presidents have said we would commit troops to defend Taiwan. Trump hasn't said that, and wouldn't answer the question.

The US wants Taiwan to remain independent but doesn't want to piss off China by saying so. The US doesn't want to commit troops to defend Taiwan but doesn't want to tell China that.

I'd probably give a non-answer and say that the current stance towards Taiwan isn't sustainable and escalating threats doesn't affect any beneficial changes to the status quo.
