Anyone else ever change the two cables on a garage door and rewind the torsion springs?

Actually this is the second time I've had to do this. And from last Fall, I've had to replace a septic tank pump ($800), replace a 20 year-old cartridge in the shower water control (tricky), have a new roof put on (costly), and have removed a huge red oak tree that was leaning toward the house ($535).

Owning your own home is costly, ya know.
not our problem you didn't save enough for retirement.

Is there anything you can put on the cables to avoid salt corrosion the problem?
Coating cables with a sealer is a bad fix.
Same with plastic coated cable.
Moisture eventually gets under the sealer and rusts out the cable even faster.
Galvanized cable will last longer.
But I suggest buying stainless steel cables and clamps.
They'll last longer than the door.

That is a mean ass comment. It makes you sound like a snob, just because he works on his own home projects.

I would never ask you for it to be your problem. Between my pension, my part time job, my wife teaching school and my wife's and my SS, we do just fine. There have been plenty of full time jobs opening up in town lately, if I really needed one. But I like having time for myself to do the things I like to do.
