Being a Gunners Mate carries a sense of pride on a Destroyer because they work on the 6" and 8" guns, along with the smaller stuff. I would have hated to serve on a Destroyer. I was on a carrier....basically a city on the water. 3 years going out to sea doing flight-ops for John McCain types. Naval Aviators. Got the hell out in 79'. Went back in to the Army in 84'. Served under President's Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Senior, and Clinton.

The military sucks while serving under Democrats. Bill Clinton made the same mistake in Somalia that Hillary made in Benghazi. Their disdain for the military was obvious. Obama is worse.

Stallone got the idea from reports and personal accounts from vets. Claiming it never happened is just denial. We have videos of blacks spitting on cops, staredowns in Missouri, and Muslims spitting on cameramen in Michigan. It's difficult to get away with that sort of thing anymore now that we have the Internet and youtube. But you can always claim it never happened in the 60s and 70s.

But people like John Kerry popularized anti-military sentiment in America. He talked about things that supposedly happened like he was there....but his accounts were not personal accounts. Just stories he heard.

Nope...I wasn't in Nam. And HT or Hull Maint Technician was a rate that was used in the 70s. It combined Damage-control Specialist with Ship-fitters to make one rate. I heard it was phased out after I ETSed. On my DD-214 it was listed as HT2....Hull Tech 2nd Class Petty Officer.

However, my MOS when I retired was SFC 18E....Special Forces Commo Sgt. Better known to you dirtbags as "Green Beret".

Having been stationed in Frisco during 'Nam, I can tell you that instances of being spat upon by Hippies were common.

Those of us stationed on the Presidio were warned not to wear our uniforms off base unless we were in our POVs driving to and from work.

And it didn't necessarily take a uniform to get ragged on, insulted, and yes, spat upon. Our GI haircuts stuck out and often received the Hippie Love Kiss.

Well, and then their are the stupid. Not one shred of evidence, huh. God, when you have no clue you shine like a 100 watt lightbulb in the middle of the ocean on a very cloudy night. When I came back from 'Nam in 73, we had a briefing. They told us when we got to Pearl, immediately shed the uniform, especially if we were going to the mainland with a possibility to go into San Francisco. Some of the guys there had been back and then re-deployed because they hated the 'world' so bad. It was common knowledge that you stayed away from crowds of hippies or they would spit on you, throw urine on you or perhaps even assault you. One guy, the first time back to the world, had a real good looking girl come up to him and ask if he was just coming back from 'Nam. When he said yes, she threw a bag of crap on him. Retaliate? Yeah, if you wanted to be immediately charged.
