What our policy should be is one of non-involvement. The USA began to increasingly support Israel because the Soviets were supporting, and arming to the teeth, the Muslim/Arab neighbors of Israel who were out to destroy Israel from 1948 to present. Actually even before 1948. As Soviet support declined PRChina has increased and encourages other rouge nations like Iran.

In case it eludes you, we are all as much uphill to each other as we are downhill. The USA has an economy built, and dependent on foreign trade. We are embroiled because it is part of being "in the world". Isolationism for the USA was invalidated nearly a century ago.

BTW, petroleum is almost more valuable for the products made from it as for the energy. "alternative energy" requires petroleum for the components it uses, and it doesn't replace petrol for the products it is raw material for.
