There's no good reason why civilians should have guns. NONE. Whatsovever. They are more dangerous to family members than bad guys, and you aren't going to overthrow the government with them.

That said, if you really, really need to compensate for your... ahem.. shortcomings, that's fine. As long as you pass a THOROUGH background check, I'm fine with it.

I just had to submit 200 pages of documentation to the government and pay $4000 to update my wife's immigration status from a work visa to a marriage Visa, because people like you are terrified a Mexican might move in next door.

I think I'm entitled to some assurances that you aren't a fucking crazy person before you buy a gun.

My Mom is 87 and doesn't need to carry a gun either. Of course, that could be because she's living on the grounds of a nursing home with my dad in a very, very low crime area and is suffering from Alzheimer's. It might also be because she is a Conservative Mennonite and a pacifist who would not shoot someone even if they were attacking her. Or any number of other reasons that have nothing whatsoever to do with anyone else's situation.

Is my point becoming clearer? Your Mom's situation is not anyone else's situation. Does your mom live alone in a neighborhood that has seen frequent home invasions and/or assaults of defenseless older ladies? Does she insist on being independent and living as long as possible in her beloved home, even if crime is rising around her? Does she walk alone after dark in areas that have seen assaults on such people?

See, it simply doesn't matter what your or your mom's situations are. They are not anyone else's, so to cite hers as evidence that someone else wouldn't feel the need for protection is fallacious.
