Parts of the vast ice sheet of East Antarctica – which holds enough water to raise global sea levels by 53m – could begin an irreversible slide into the sea this century, causing an unstoppable process of global coastal destruction, scientists have warned.

Didn't that happen in 1985?

I mean, the same con artists said it would.

Sea Ice News: Volume 4 #1 – Arctic Ice gain sets a new record

With a few weeks of growth still to occur, the Arctic has blown away the previous record for ice gain this winter. This is only the third winter in history when more than 10 million km² of new ice has formed.

In other news, the Antarctic seems to be continuing on its slow and steady rise, and is now approaching 450 days of uninterrupted above normal ice area according to this data: arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/timeseries.south.anom.1979-2008Â…which shows the last time the Antarctic sea ice was below normal was 2011.8932 or 11/22/2011.

This continued growth of ice in the Arctic Antarctic make the arguments for ice mass loss in Antarctica rather hard to believe, something also backed up by ICESAT data.

Sea ice extent has nothing to do with sea level. It is already in the ocean, so the formation or melting of it can make no difference.

On the other hand, land ice, on Antarctica or Greenland, could make a tremendous difference, if increasing amounts were to sliide into the ocean.

I'm surprised that so many skeptics are confused about this simple fact.

We're not. We're confused that you so called thinking people have a hard time realizing that when sea ice is growing so too is the land ice.

You're content to rely on 3% who deny global warming?

Climate Change: Consensus

Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities,1and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. The following is a partial list of these organizations, along with links to their published statements and a selection of related resources.

99% of welfare recipients agree that welfare is needed and good for society and the path to prosperity for all.

When Polled, Dr. Michael Mann said "Fuck yeah I want more free money."

Someone seems confused about the difference between seasonal sea ice and land ice. But then, such details escape almost all deniers. After all, if they understood the science, they wouldn't be deniers.

Oh, the Antarctic sea ice increase was correctly predicted by AGW science 20 years ahead of it. That's why AGW science has such credibility, because it keeps getting all the predictions correct.
Really? Like the record cold winter we've been having this year? "Polar Vortex" anyone? What were the predictions...That the climate changes? OMG what a friggin huge revelation that is.

I'm going to buy a yacht and become a PIRATE!

No matter how much you hope for it, the Antarctic isn't going to melt. The Arctic isn't even melting as the warmist kookburgers have been praying for. Nowhere in Antarctica does the temperature even get anywhere close to 32 degrees F. How can the ice slide into the sea when the Earth underneath is bowl shaped?

Face it, warmist cult members are too stupid to continue breathing.

This year, Antarctica recorded coldest temperature on earth since they started keeping records. Somehow, that seems to be inconsistent with a warming globe.

Oh wait, I know. When it gets hot it's part of global warning, and when it gets cold it's also part of global warming.

So when exactly is it not part of global warming? NEVER! Ha ha ha.

Cool, a Right Wingnut site. Wonder how much those "scientists" sold their credibility for.

Nice try.. The graph and pix are from "cryospere today" AND U of Ill.. NEXT !!!!!!!

Meanwhile, your doom and gloom is OLD Antarctic news, based on the slippage of ONE MINISCULE glacial outflow into the ocean.. Your whole phoney propaganda organ is on life support at this point...

University of Illinois? Isn't that place a bastion of hard core right wing thought?

Hmm...

Im not sure what sort of relevance Mr Wizard's experiment has to do with Antarctic land ice. dropping an ice cube into a partially filled glass certainly raises the level, the melting of the ice cube does not.

my problem with the latest prediction of doom for the Antarctic is that it is yet another data free computer simulation which demurely refuses to acknowledge the time scale of tens of thousands of years, even if their unlikely scenario had any resemblance to reality.

anybody else remember the computer art animation showing how Antarctic ice was flowing faster than predicted (worse than we thought!!!) yet in the intervening years the ice cap has grown? we are far from understanding the dynamics of ice formation and flow back to the sea for Antarctica.

the bias towards looking for doomsday results has distorted much of the research being done. satellite altimetry and GRACE need assumptions to be made before they can be calibrated but because scientists wanted to find mass loss they just programmed it in. as the time span lengthens, it is harder and harder to hide the lack of results they were looking for. the gigantic ice loses that were originally claimed for Antarctica have steadily come down over the last decade and some methods are actually finding an overall increase. there is no imminent collapse of the Antarctic ice field because of warming, nor from the slow process of ice flow, and the ice cap itself is locked in place by the mountain ranges buried within it.

I assume he is calling WUWT a right wingnut site. it's funny how a science blog with probably the best set of links to original results for sea ice etc is slagged by those who have probably never checked it out personally. I bet Political Junkie has no problems with both accepting or denying the same information, from the same original source, depending on who is citing it. Cryosphere Today from Watts = propaganda, Cryosphere Today from SkepticalScience = gospel. hahahahah

The average annual temperature in Antarctica is -55 F.

Therefore the average temp of Antarctica would have to rise 87 F for all the ice to melt.

I don't think that will be happening any time soon do you?
