Head Tax Payments Begin
Jason McIntyre
Saturday, October 21, 2006
Compensation for a decades-old head tax is finally arriving for 400 Chinese-Canadians.
More than 80 000 Chinese immigrants were forced to pay a fee of up to $500 to enter Canada between 1885 and 1923.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a formal apology in June to all those who were unjustly charged and declared a redress.
In Vancouver's Chinatown, Heritage Minister Beverly Oda presented cheques Friday to five survivors. 99-year-old Charlie Quan was given $20 000, which he says he'll spend on travelling.
An additional 400 others will receive compensatory payments.
