Great piece in the Atlantic by one of the great political observers of our time. She starts with Belarus and ties it together with other autocratic states and our own country, which we nearly lost to an authoritarian prick. This is probably a 15 minute read. Bookmark for later if needed. WELL worth your time.

All of us have in our minds a cartoon image of what an autocratic state looks like. There is a bad man at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents.
But in the 21st century, that cartoon bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are run not by one bad guy, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, security services (military, police, paramilitary groups, surveillance), and professional propagandists. The members of these networks are connected not only within a given country, but among many countries.
The corrupt, state-controlled companies in one dictatorship do business with corrupt, state-controlled companies in another. The police in one country can arm, equip, and train the police in another. The propagandists share resources—the troll farms that promote one dictator’s propaganda can also be used to promote the propaganda of another—and themes, pounding home the same messages about the weakness of democracy and the evil of America.
What really bonds the members of this club is a common desire to preserve and enhance their personal power and wealth. Unlike military or political alliances from other times and places, the members of this group don’t operate like a bloc, but rather like an agglomeration of companies—call it Autocracy Inc. Their links are cemented not by ideals but by deals—deals designed to take the edge off Western economic boycotts, or to make them personally rich—which is why they can operate across geographical and historical lines.

So cliche. Accuse the other side of doing what you are doing.

I claim personal freedom and liberty.

You want every person on earth to be forced to get experimental gene therapy.

AND I AM THE AUTHORITARIAN?
Yes, you are most definitely an authoritarian, as are all Trumptards.

Sorry Harley, but 90% of the authoritarians in this country are on Team Trump. They are far more interested in power than they are actually legislating.
Legislating in this country usually IS authoritarianism, genius.
This just shows how disingenuous you are, is all.
You care about the D, not abuse of power.

No sir, legislating is what Republicans USED to do. Currently, you're not interested in any sort of compromise, which true legislating requires. Just look at Mitch McTurtle for starters. All he really cares about is not giving Biden a win and consolidating power. Ditto with Spineless Kevin in the House.

he isn't in power, so you can't be correct. xiden is, and he is mandating, making your thread you whining about your side.

you have problems following the bouncing ball.

Its fucking hilarious to watch Libtards call Trump an authoritarian...lol

For starters? Several states have given their legislatures the power to throw out votes they don't like in future elections. Authoritarianism at its finest!
then it's the state's issue, still not following that bouncing ball eh?

Interesting. The article is really about intl authoritarianism, not that in the US. But what the article calls upon the West to do is to "crack down" upon for authoritarian govts ability to buy stuff and use banking systems. And THAT is certainly NOT what Reagan was about. And as we've seen in Egypt, and in Libya, to name but two "throwing off the chains" doesn't necessarily create a new and freer society. And Iraq may be teetering on another civil war.

I'm not disagreeing that US for policy since Slick has been the stuff of LSD trips, and that Trump openly embraced the worst of the tyrants who torture and oppress their own populations.
