One of the constants running through the healthcare debate has been the question of coverage for illegal immigrants. From the beginning I have said it would not be a problem, Obama would simply grant amnesty to the 12 million or so criminals thus solving the question of healthcare coverage for "undocumented resident aliens." As it turns out, he has begun to lay the foundation for just such a move.
I opposed to the IRCA Amnesty of 1986 (the "one-time only" blanket amnesty for some 2.8 million illegal aliens), I was against amnesty of 1994(a temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 illegal aliens, Section 245(i)), I was against the extension of the 1994 amnesty in 1997, I opposed the NACARA Amnesty of 1997 (an amnesty for nearly one million illegal aliens from Central America), I was opposed to the Haitian amnesty act of 1998 (an amnesty for 125,000 illegal aliens from Haiti), I railed against the Late Amnesty of 2000 (an amnesty for approximately 400,000 illegal aliens who claimed they should have been included under the 1986 IRCA amnesty), and the extension of the 1994 rolling amnesty (Section 245(i)) in 2000 got my dander up. I was against Bush's "earned legalization program" in 2004, and I oppose amnesty now.
I do not believe you reward bad or illegal behavior. You don't do it with your children and you certainly don't do it for adults who know better. It only encourages others to break the law(s). Plain and simple.
Obama: Legalize illegals to get them health care
Republicans see a backdoor move toward 'amnesty'
By Stephen Dinan
President Obama said this week that his health care plan won't cover illegal immigrants, but argued that's all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage.
He also staked out a position that anyone in the country legally should be covered - a major break with the 1996 welfare reform bill, which limited most federal public assistance programs only to citizens and longtime immigrants.
"Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don't simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken," Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. "That's why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else...

"It is ironic that the president told the American people that illegal immigrants should not be covered by the health care bill, but now just days later he's talking about letting them in the back door," said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee.
"If the American people do not want to provide government health care for illegal immigrants, why would they support giving them citizenship, the highest honor America can bestow?" Mr. Smith said...
