Well, there was that whole civil war thing.

Our country has always been a fraught mix of cultures, races, religions, ideologies, etc ... and the founders knew that strict limits on government power were the only way to make it work. Keeping government weak, especially at the Federal level, helped to keep any one faction from gaining power and waging a "culture war" on everyone else.

But the Federal government has radically expanded in scope and power, power that the culture warriors really, really want. Combine that with the division and fear mongering promoted by the two-party system and you get meltdown.
