London (dpa) - The Syrian government is "profiting from widespread and systematic enforced disappearances" by financially exploiting relatives desperate for information about tens of thousands of missing people, Amnesty International said on Thursday.
The Syrian conflict, which started in 2011 with peaceful protests against President Bashar al-Assad's regime, has spiralled into a multisided civil war.
"The government's enforced disappearances are part of a coldly calculated, widespread attack against the civilian population," said Philip Luther, director of rights group Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa programme.
"These are crimes against humanity, part of a carefully orchestrated campaign designed to spread terror and quash the slightest sign of dissent across the country," Luther said.
