American journalist killed by Israeli military

Not true and you know it.
Keep running. Israel will continue to investigate, you like it or not.

Where is that bullet which killed her?

Why won't the PA let Israel see it ?

What is the PA afraid of?

Your fanaticism when it comes to this story is very clear.

Israel is guilty. Period. To Jew haters like you.

When I heard about the death of Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist from the Palestinian Greek Melkite community, I was not aware of her ethnic or religious background. Indeed, most Levantine Greeks, or Rum, are a cosmopolitan mix of identities and blend in with the majority.

Within hours after her death, all of us became aware of her Melkite Greek Catholic background. Sadly, social media was flooded with comments and videos from Arab Muslims that forbid their fellow Muslims from asking God to grant her mercy, as is tradition in the Middle East. Because Shireen wasn’t a Muslim, such a farewell statement was said to be forbidden. Despite her strong support of the Palestinians, for Muslims in the region, she remained a stranger.

Shireen isn’t the only one to face such discrimination. Last year, Michel Kilo, a brave Syrian dissident from the Greek Orthodox community of Syria, died. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the Syrian opposition movement. When he died, many Syrians who were staunch opponents of the Assad regime argued against asking God for mercy for his soul simply because he was a Christian. They held this view despite the fact that he spent his life taking profound risks to fight the Assad dictatorship.

Many Levantines of Greek heritage have played prominent roles in the most important issues in the Middle East. They headed Arab nationalist, communist and leftist movements. They even led radical Palestinians movements (George Habash and Wadih Haddad, for example). Despite all the praise that Muslims and Arabs give these Greek Levantine figures, they are brutally attacked if they utter a word of their native culture.

On Easter, a well-known Greek Orthodox TV presenter named Nicholas Khoury published the phrase “Christ has risen” on his Facebook account. He was instantly attacked with thousands of comments that ridiculed him, including from his own fans who had long cheered him for confronting Islamophobia.

Greek Levantine organizations still active today

Today, there are Greek Levantine organizations in the diaspora and the Middle East (specifically Lebanon), that call for the recognition of an eastern Greek identity, as an ethnicity independent of Arabs and Turks.

This struggle is being led by educated young women and men, and members of the older generations that saw with their own eyes how their fight to affirm an inclusive identity has failed in the face of Islamism. Greece and Cyprus should take these transformations seriously and help the Levantine Greeks form new associations and engage in peaceful solutions in the region.

Peace be upon the soul of Shireen Abu Akleh. She gave her life to a cause which many racists and supremacists are involved in, who do not distinguish between Christian and Jew, but rather see them all as infidels. These radicals, such as Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, actually applaud the conversion of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. No wonder they can’t bring themselves to ask God to have mercy on the soul of Shireen.

Originally saw this on NBC. The anchor stated that their organization's efforts to verify a video released by the Israeli government that attempted to paint Palestinian militants as the culprits revealed that the Israeli government's video did not depict the same location as the incident, did not match Al Jazeera footage that caught her death live, and did not even show the shooting. In other words, it's fake.

So first Saudi Arabia kills an American journalist, now Israel kills an American journalist. Perhaps this is a deeply troubled region of the world and the United States should be loathe to maintain close relationships with these countries.

"We were going to film the Israeli army operation and suddenly they shot us without asking us to leave or stop filming," Al Jazeera cited Mr Samoudi as saying. "The first bullet hit me and the second bullet hit Shireen.
"There was no Palestinian military resistance at all at the scene," he added.

I don't believe it. This is a desperate attempt to vilify Israel. Israel isn't like Saudi Arabia.

Following a review of Al-Jazeera and PA TV recordings of Shireen Abu Akleh's funeral, PMW can report three striking facts:

1- The motivation of the Palestinians who took her coffin to carry it on their shoulders and by foot was to avoid a funeral “as if a Christian woman died.”

2- Abu Akleh’s family had wanted her body taken by hearse to the church for the funeral, and not carried through the streets of Jerusalem.

3- When the hearse arrived to take the coffin to the church, the Palestinian mob that had gathered at the hospital prevented the car from reaching the entrance and receiving Abu Akleh's body. Instead, it was the Palestinian mob that snatched the coffin and thereby disrupted the funeral. Israeli Police prevented further disruption.

• A few hours before the funeral, Abu Akleh’s brother told Al-Jazeera that the plan was for the coffin to be taken at 2:00 p.m. from the hospital to the church in the hearse on Highway One, the main North-South transit for cars in Jerusalem.

• In the same interview, Abu Akleh’s brother made it clear that although the Palestinian youth want to carry her coffin on their shoulders through the streets of the Old City, there had already been funerals of that kind (Palestinian Islamic Martyr style) in Jenin, Nablus, and Ramallah. In Jerusalem, the family wanted the coffin to be taken in the hearse as agreed with Israeli Police, so there would be no disruptions.

• 1:26 p.m.: The church’s hearse approaches the hospital to take Abu Akleh’s coffin, but the Palestinian mob, stops the car, bangs on its windows, and forces the hearse to leave without the coffin.

• 1:40 p.m.: Palestinian Jerusalem official: The Palestinian crowd prevented the church’s hearse from taking Abu Akleh’s body so she would not be treated “as if a Christian woman died”

• Same Jerusalem official: The crowd wants her body to be carried on their shoulders (according to Palestinian tradition for Shahids – Islamic Martyrs) and not taken in the church’s hearse (even though Abu Akleh was a Christian).

• 1:49 Unauthorized people in the crowd try to hijack the funeral and carry her body out of the hospital. Israeli Police stops them and demands the body be returned to the hospital for the funeral procession as planned in the hearse

• 1:51 The police officers use force to defend themselves and return the body to the hospital to await the hearse. The confrontation lasts about 3 minutes and the coffin is quickly returned to the hospital

• 14:00 Under police protection the hearse returns and takes Abu Akleh’s body from the hospital

• 14:13 Hearse arrives at the church for a Christian funeral and burial

I have obviously spent a lot of time on the Shireen Abu Akleh story over the past couple of weeks, and I put together everything we know into this video.

The IDF could not have killed her, for reasons I describe.

It ended up taking 33 minutes but I think that it explains everything as well as possible, without getting too caught in the weeds. There are plenty of problems with the AP and CNN reports but this covers the basic issue - the distance from the gun to Shireen and who could have physically been that exact distance. (I could have added ten minutes on the idiocy of the CNN quoted "expert" who happens to hate Israel.)

I hope it helps people understand the issues.

UPDATE: I am told that the Duvedian unit in Jenin uses theM4 Commando 5.56mm 11.5 30+1. The muzzle speed is somewhat lower than the longer M4 or M16. My estimate is that the distance based on the audio analysis would be longer than I said in the video, about 196 meters, still lower than the 215 meters distance the IDF was known to have been. Shireen Abu Akleh and Israel’s War on Journalism, with Lina Abu Akleh

– The Palestinian authorities in the West Bank and Gaza are arresting, abusing, and criminally charging journalists and activists who express peaceful criticism of the authorities. The crackdown directly violates obligations that Palestine recently assumed in ratifying international treaties protecting free speech.

“Both Palestinian governments, operating independently, have apparently arrived at similar methods of harassment, intimidation and physical abuse of anyone who dares criticize them,” said Sari Bashi, Israel and Palestine country director at Human Rights Watch. “The Palestinian people fought hard to gain the protections that accompany membership in the international community, and their leaders should take their treaty obligations seriously.”

Human Rights Watch documented five cases – two in the West Bank and three in Gaza – in which security forces arrested or questioned journalists, a political activist, and two rap musicians based on their peaceful criticism of the authorities. Four of those arrested, two in Gaza and two in the West Bank, say that security forces physically abused or tortured them. The authorities in Gaza denied the allegations, and in the West Bank the authorities said they could not investigate the allegations in the absence of a formal complaint. These crackdowns follow a pattern of violations of the right to free speech and due process that Human Rights Watch has documented in the past five years, most recently in May 2015. In the West Bank, some progress has been made in protecting the rights of those arrested.

In Gaza, Hamas authorities detained and intimidated an activist who criticized the government for failing to protect a man with a mental disability; a journalist who posted a photograph of a woman looking for food in a garbage bin; and a journalist who alleged medical malpractice at a public hospital after a newborn baby died. In the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority (PA) arrested and charged activists and musicians who ridiculed Palestinian security forces for cooperating with Israel and accused the government of corruption. The offending statements were allegedly made in Facebook postings, graffiti, and rap songs.
