Old sea song (1940)
The sea is wide open
And the waves rage in the distance
Comrade, we're going far away
Away from our land
There's no song on deck
And the Red Sea is noisy
And the shore is dark and narrow
When you remember it, your heart aches
Comrade, I can't keep watch.
Said the stoker to the stoker.
The fires in my furnaces don't burn at all.
I can't hold back the steam in the boilers
When he had finished throwing the coal, he drank water.
Water that was desalinated, unclean.
Sweat fell from his face, traces of soot.
He heard the driver speak
You haven't finished your watch - you can't quit.
The mechanic's not happy with you
You must go to the doctor and tell him
He'll give you medicine if you're sick
He's out on deck, he's unconscious.
His eyes are all blurred
He saw for a moment a blinding light
He fell down and his heart never beat again
They tied a grate at his feet.
And the bunk was wrapped around his corpse.
The ship's old man priest came in.
And many a tear glistened
In vain the old mother waits for her son to come home
They'll tell her and she'll weep
And the waves run astern
And their trace disappears in the distance
