Today's Gospel was from Chapter 9 of Mark, where the Apostles were arguing among themselves who would be the greatest. When Jesus asked them what they had been arguing over, they all fell silent. Jesus said to them that those who wish to be greatest must be the servant of all.
Today's first reading was from the book of Wisdom: Could it be the more things change, the more things remain the same? A lot of this verse reminds me of what the powerful in this nation have put Donald Trump through, or for that matter, anyone who challenges those in power.
The wicked say:
Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us;
he sets himself against our doings,
reproaches us for transgressions of the law
and charges us with violations of our training.
Let us see whether his words be true;
let us find out what will happen to him.
For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him
and deliver him from the hand of his foes.
With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test
that we may have proof of his gentleness
and try his patience.
Let us condemn him to a shameful death;
for according to his own words, God will take care of him.
Finally a homily noted that psychologists have noted that many who are continually depressed have this in common: Their lives, their wants and wishes, their ambitions are centered on themselves. God's commands and Commandments are always centered on what is best for us. What is best for us, is not great ambition for ourselves, but to serve others, placing others at the center of our great ambition. Could it be...sometimes...when we are going through a bout of depression, is that our thoughts and ambitions have been too much on self and not enough on others?
What say you about anything that was presented at Mass today?
