Amazon & Unions...

I am largely indifferent to unions and only belonged to one as a grocery store stock boy when I was a kid

the problem with unions is human nature

union bosses are often corrupt and untrustworthy

also unions can have too much power as they did in the midwest where they drove down productivity and cost their members jobs

but properly run unions are not entirely bad

its just so few are properly run

I was indifferent for years as well. Then the issue fell into my lap because it directly affected me...

THEN I got very involved; to the point where I ended up as a Steward for my department and one of the members who negotiated our first contract. I stayed in that position for just over a decade before stepping down almost 2 years ago.

Corruption in Unions is really more a problem of uninvolved members than anything else. Corruption can’t happen when there’s member oversight.

Unions don’t have too much power. Their members just need to remember that no matter how important the Union is, their paychecks come from the Company not the Union. Working together is far more productive thanfighting each other. Both sides need to remember that.

I disagree entirely. Union Steward Lee J. Cobb was very involved in the union and seemed pretty corrupt as well. Ditto with other labor leaders like the late Jimmy Hoffa who financed construction of Mob Casinos.

Those people can only remain in those positions as long as the membership continues to vote for them. I’m not saying they weren’t corrupt. I’m saying the remedy should have been removal from office.

I’ve seen it done in my own Local. We went so far as suing a former Union officer for the theft he was involved in. It was found because we have a members committee that audits the books on a regular basis.

The Amazon workers don't want better pay and benefits. With 6th grade educations who can blame them.

A typical ignorant, mean-spirited response from a Liberal. Typical too is your immature, 6th-grade behavior.

Grow up, son.

$15 is great pay...for that one should not do one ounce above and beyond. Want me to work harder? Then pay more.

My butt! Paying you more for doing mediocre work is simply rewarding bad behavior. A hard-wired characteristic of the far left.

There's a National Labor Relations Board and OSHA for that. Unions are only there to protect the incompetent.

I will agree that on certain occasions Union regulations protect those who they shouldn’t. I’ve had to do that myself when I was a Steward. I will also say that I didn’t do anything more for the individual than I was required to. I didn’t go any further to protect him and he eventually quit when he realized we weren’t going to cover for his ass.

On the other hand, the same Union has provided pay, benefits and working conditions improvements for the rest of the department.

Strange that a progressive company like Amazon would be against fair union practices. Something fishy in the vote? You can bet the hypocrite media ain't interested.

Of course...if they don't get enough votes, they can always "find" enough to win the election...

With risk comes possible reward, not guaranteed reward, otherwise there would be no risk. I, and many others, are risk-adverse. I’ll take a guaranteed $25 over the risk of getting either $0 or $40.

Not me, but whatever floats your boat.

Probably why I worked on pure commission for the past 45 years or so.

FDR was 100% correct when he adamantly opposed public unions. It is terrible public policy. This just disgusts me.

California teachers’ latest demand: Free child care
Teachers unions across California say the need for educator child care was a problem before the pandemic.

SACRAMENTO — California teachers are ready to go back to the classroom. But the state’s largest union has a new ask: free child care for their own kids.

The demand is salt in the wound for parents who struggled with distance learning at home amid intense reopening negotiations that have dragged on for a year.

Good for you. As I said, I’m risk-adverse. I want to have GUARANTEES on pay, benefits, etc... I may take a little less than I might have gotten to get more than I might have gotten. That allows me to have a budget planned at all times. On the rare occasions that Mandatory OT occurs it’s a nice extra. It’s NEVER factored into the budget. I know people who have made that mistake.

Government employee unions exist for one reason: to permit their members to continue to GORGE at the public trough.

You hit the nail on the head!

Time was (I'm an old codger) that a worker took a state, federal, or local government job which paid less than the private sector but had benefits and job security. Now they earn more than the private sector and work less.

For many years I did a lot of business with the post office. I became convinced that they had a special "walking room" where they had a treadmill set up and programmed to move at a specific casual pace for training purposes. Also, if an employee was observed walking too quickly, they were sent for re-education on the treadmill.

The corporatists have you attacking fellow middle class workers because they have a union job. You took the bait. They should be making $15 per hour and be darned thankful for it. Keep em all in the poor house. $15 doesn't even come close to lower middle class. You will protect every last ceo and treat them later me a god however. Head scratchers.
